Shortsville-Manchester Community Garden 2009

Updated June 8th 2009

Our next step in the garden is to add color and what better way to do this than with flowers.

We had the pleasure of visiting Good Earth owned by Teri Sauerhafer at 877 LaRue Rd, Clifton Springs, NY 14432; Teri donated flowers to the garden last year and has donated them again this year.  Give the garden a few weeks to grow and come see the beautiful flowers. In the mean time stop out to see all the beautiful and unusual flowers Teri has at Good Earth. Thank you Teri for your generous flower donations they are greatly appreciated..

Our first meeting for 2009 was held May 14th at the Red Jacket Community Library.

We discussed what went well last year and what we would like to do and plant this year.

We set a planting date for May 19th at 8:00 am and had a nice turn out for the planting.
Six volunteers were there, which made easy work of all the planting we did. Some of the items we put in were 3 kinds of tomatoes, 2 kinds of peppers, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, peas, canry melon and Jerusalem artichoke. The pole beans and garlic were already in.  We also purchased some rhubarb and have started a rhubarb patch in the herb garden.

This year we collected $3.00 or plants from the volunteers to help defray the cost of the plants.  We all wish to thank Michele and Lynn Fish of Fish Farms on Mt Payne Rd in Manchester NY and Chris Gray from Fresh-Ayr-Farm Market 4846 Route 96, Manchester NY.  For their generosity we couldn’t have put in so many plants on our small budget.

The volunteers will all share in the weeding, watering, and the fruits of our labor, and we will again this year share a portion of our produce with the food cupboard in Manchester.

Many thanks to all our volunteers for helping to  make our vision for a Community Garden possible.
